Values
To Preserve The Family Unit
Preservation of family unity is paramount in every civil society. Therefore at Homeward Bound, we are dedicated to serving families with children. Emmaus House is one of the few shelters in the state that serves men, women, and teens who are part of a family unit. This is no easy task, however it must be done. The families at Emmaus House are just like others across Delaware, confronting the challenges of teen peer pressure, bullying, affordable child care, school, work and finding quality family time. These issues are impacted when a family is experiencing the crisis of homelessness. In keeping families together, Emmaus House is reducing the trauma families’ encounter as a result of their housing crisis. Family members may experience mental health issues, physical health issues, as well as school and employment absenteeism. The goal of Emmaus House is to empower families to increase their level of self-sufficiency.
To Empower Families As They Work Towards Self-Sufficiency
Homeward Bound operates with the premise that good stewardship requires doing more than providing shelter form and food. The Emmaus House programs of Homeward Bound go beyond the primary function of a homeless shelter, and provide an array of services including case management services, parenting classes, money management workshops, employment workshops, and a domestic violence support group. The residents of Emmaus House are offered the opportunity to accomplish two key elements in their endeavor to become self-sufficient:
- Acquire knowledge and insight pertaining to budgeting, banking, employment, securing child care etc.
- Develop the confidence to apply what they have learned at Emmaus House to maintain safe, stable housing.
To Practice Responsible Stewardship
Homeward Bound practices responsible stewardship in many ways. At Homeward Bound we incorporate stewardship into everything we do. From financial stewardship to make sure financial standards are upheld, to resource stewardship which ensures all donation, volunteers, and staff members are utilized in the most effective manner. We also practice safety and wellness stewardship to protect the physical and mental wellbeing of families with children during their time at Emmaus House. The leadership of Homeward Bound has established an intake criteria for families seeking services to ensure Emmaus House programs provide opportunities that will have the greatest impact in the lives of the families served. Our commitment to stewardship is at the heart of who we are and what we do.
